Junior Outdoor Education

Junior

Nakusp Secondary School’s Junior Outdoor Education Course is a four credit curricular course for grade 9 and 10 students. The course teaches students about outdoor recreational activities and to enjoy these activities safely. Some of the units the students are engaged in; are survival skills, aboriginal skills, fly fishing, entomology, fly tying, CORE (BC Hunter Training), Canadian Firearms Safety Course, the Coast Guard boat proficiency course, archery, black powder shooting and ATV safety. This class was fortunate enough to go zip lining in Revelstoke this year.


Senior Outdoor Education

The Senior Outdoor Education class is also a four credited course with additional credits in Entrepreneurialism. The students are trained in Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) and earned certificates in GSAR, first aid, traffic control, and flagging, WHMIS, food safe, OSSA and Avalanche Awareness. To fund this program the students are engaged in Entrepreneurial projects such as the Tri-Flasher project. Students experience research and development, marketing, management and fabrication skills through this program. This year we will travel to Vancouver and the students are exhibitors in their own booth at the Vancouver International Boat Show in BC place. All proceeds go toward the Outdoor Ed programs at the high school. See our videos on this site for a history of the Senior Outdoor Education and flasher program.
